My PRAXIS.

I am so nervous to be taking my PRAXIS I this weekend. I feel like I am going to do so bad on them because I always mess up on standardized tests. I should have been preparing for a while longer than I did, but I guess we’ll see how that goes this weekend.

I’m just hoping the math portion isn’t as much of a killer as I have heard it is!

The good news is that if I pass them I will have one less thing on my list of things to get done ASAP.

Now that the end of the semester is (finally) coming, I am bombarded with different assignments and projects. I am so overwhelmed, especially because I am getting ready to take my PRAXIS this Saturday. I don’t know what possessed me to schedule my PRAXIS the week before finals, because I am going insane now. I am just ready for the semester to end, I never look forward to tests as much as I do during finals week!!!! It is the greatest feeling in the world to be able to have a whole semester FINISHED! I can’t wait.

I never really shared my thoughts on why I want to become a teacher. There are so many occupations in this world that come along with good benefits and high pay. Instead, I am choosing to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on an education that will not be giving me much money in a return. I will be receiving some of the best rewards in the world though. I can’t wait to be a teacher and know I am helping someone. I look so much forward to seeing a child’s smiling face when I can be there for them when they need someone to talk to. As a person interested in teaching Special Education, I can’t wait to work with students with disabilities and help them towards making progress with themselves and their education. It is going to have the ultimate pay off.

Some people feel like graduating from a technical school is not as good as graduating from a 4-year university. While a 4-year university may “better prepare” students for their jobs, I think a technical school seems to do just the same. Not only that, but many degrees obtained through a technical school come along with automatic job placement. I wish my 4-year university could give me a school to teach at as soon as I graduate.

In high school I always hated the way the administration would tell students that wearing flip flops interrupted education. I never believed in this as student, and now that I am in college I DEFINITELY go against this. We wear flip flops all the time and we learn just as well. Everyone always wears hats, tank tops, short skirts, flip flops, and the list goes on. We are not being interrupted!

Something that always bothered me in elementary school was favoritism. I think that it is so much easier to pick a “favorite” in an elementary classroom than it is in a high school classroom. Kids are always so cute and funny when they are little, so it is simple for a teacher (or anyone) to be drawn to them. It is unfair to other kids though when a teacher picks a favorite and gives them special treatment.

I most certainly believe that I may have an issue with this as a teacher, but I know I am going to work my hardest to always treat all kinds the same. My point is that no matter how much we may favor one person, we need to make sure this does not change our treatment towards others.

Sexual harassment in school districts is something extremely serious. It is important to always make sure that students as well as faculty are not being sexually harassed by anyone.

I feel that sometimes people underestimate the potential in sexually harassing comments. People may feel like a person will say certain things but not act on them and this is definitely incorrect. Students and teachers must be aware that they can get in trouble and get others in trouble for sexual harassment. It is important to make everyone aware of how to go about circumstances where they feel they are being sexually harassed or witnessing sexual harassment. Students must also be informed of what can happen to them if they sexually harass someone.

One thing that many people do not realize about teachers is that teachers have a lot of different responsibilities in the classroom and the district in general. These responsibilities reach much further than simply teaching students different material; teachers must watch to ensure that students are not being bullied or setting themselves up for harmful things on the internet. It is a teachers job to tell students in the classroom about things that can happen from sharing personal information on the internet, and it is also our job to walk around the room and make sure that the students are not doing so. We must also watch for bullying and report it immediately to make sure that no students are even in danger.

Something that is extremely distracting to students in a computer lab class room is the internet. Students have the ability to go to online gaming websites during instruction as well as go on pages such as MySpace and Facebook. While these pages are often blocked from school computers, students are always finding ways around the blocks. I think that teachers need to require students to shut down computers during instruction, or put them on sleep mode, and maybe even pull their chairs away from their desks. This way, students will be focusing more of their attention on the teacher and the material rather than different websites.

Technology in the classroom is definitely an important tool. It helps students in so many ways. It allows them to complete homework assignments online as well as participate in education games. Teachers can create presentations for students in PowerPoint to give the students visual aid and take away from the “boring lecture” that the teacher gives standing in front of the room. Students are also now able to learn at a young age how to work many things such as a word processor and even e-mail.
